Peter Tate qualified as a doctor at Newcastle in 1968 age 21.
After spells as a P&O Surgeon and as a trainee in Kentish Town he was a family doctor in Abingdon for 30 years. He was a GP trainer for 25 years, and an MRCGP examiner from 1981. He retired as convenor of the panel of examiners in March 2006.
He is the sole author of The Doctor’s Communication Handbook now in its 7th edition which won a leading French medical literary prize: Prix Prescire in October 2006 and has been translated into 6 languages. It was highly commended in the BMA book awards in 1994 and 2015.
He is also the author of The Other Side of Medicine, a collection of essays and short stories. He was a co author of The Consultation (1984) and The New Consultation (2002) both OUP.
He has written 3 novels, Seasickness and If you knew Susie both available on Kindle. A third novel, recently completed, is an Irish Ghost and Fairy story called The Seanachai (storyteller). He has recently finished "The Curatage Ghost" a sort of famous four adventure for the grandchildren, set in Corfe Castle.
He has written and presented three educational DVDs for doctors. Effective Consulting the Five Key Tasks, Interpersonal Skills and Developing an efficient consulting style, available from Amazon and the RCGP bookshop. He has lectured widely on communication issues.
Peter was awarded the MBE in 2008. He was jointly awarded the prestigious Lynn Payer Award for outstanding contributions to the literature of the teaching of effective healthcare communication by the AACH in October 2011.  
Peter painted occasionally as a young man, particularly during a time at sea with P&O in the late 60s. He started again when Judy and he moved to Corfe Castle nearly 12 years ago. Peter has been a keen amateur photographer for fifty years and has recently been exploring the possibilities of high dynamic range photography. Peter’s painting work is varied and now infrequent. He paints mainly in quick drying oil, some mixed media and he swings between the normal and the bizarre. Being secretary of Purbeck Art Weeks (PAW) fills the rest of his spare time.
